  • Triban 540 flatbar

    Tony (United Kingdom)
Used for 7 to 12 months
I have a 2017 Triban 540 flatbar with a 10 speed 12-28 cassette. It is a great bike and very good value for money but I would like a lower bottom gear, would either a 32 or 34 be compatible with the Tiagra shifter? If I need a new chain, which should I have?
    Response of the brand
Here is the user manual link for the Tiagra rear derailleur:
You will need 5-6mm gap between your jockey wheel and the largest sprocket. You will need to adjust the B limit screw to achieve this correct spacing. If not, your derailleur will not function correctly.
It seems that the 34T will be OK as you have a long cage rear mech on your bike. Thankfully, the shifter has no bearing on the rear derailleur's ability to reach the 34T.
You will need a 10 speed compatible chain and the manual enclosed tells you how to shorten the chain if required as you will need a new chain as you current one will be too short.
If you're not sure, drop a line to your local Decathlon store workshop who can provide further assistance over the telephone or in person.

I was looking for a road bike I could put the miles in without breaking the bank and found the 540. Ive had the bike for 8 months now and have ridden 3200KM on it and Im very pleased with it. After purchase I changed the rear cassette to an 11/32 as I live in a hilly area (I needed it) and I ditched the crappy Hutchison tyres for a set of Gator Skins which have been faultless.

I've not had any issues with the bike other than the chain snapping after 400km (but I accept that could have happened on any bike ) and the bike is on the heavier side (with SPDs on my medium is 10.3KG - given the price though I cant grumble). Ill be looking to upgrade the bike early 2019 m and will definitely look to sticking with Btwin.
  • 300 mile review

    Peter (United Kingdom)
Used for 2 to 8 weeks
Great value bike, best I could afford, and I love it, been on a few 50 miles rides with the cycling club and also is great on my commute to work. The brake stopping strength was better than I had before on the red Triban 3 and it actually surprised me first time, as I was going downhill and didn't expect it.
  • Amazing value and a great bike

    Julian (United Kingdom)

I looked at lots of reviews of bikes in this price range and this had excellent reviews. I tried one out cycling around the store and was impressed and bought one. The gear change is so smooth and it has a good turn of speed. The brakes were very really well set up and the pedalling is also smooth. I bought some different tyres at the store as I wanted more puncture protection which was no problem. The only thing I did not get on with was the saddle which for me was not that comfortable but I do a lot of miles. I am so pleased I bought one. Yesterday I completed a 200 mile in a day sportive and the Triban 540 was brilliant. In fact it did better than bikes that were over twice the price. The Cambridge store service was excellent. Highly recommended.
  • Fantastic value for money

I brought this bike after reading reviews online that claimed it is the best road bike sub £1000 and I wasn’t disappointed. I had a hybrid bike previously and was amazed at the difference between the two. I have ridden some friends road bikes which cost a lot more and this easily stacks up well against them.
