    1. Sighting compass
Designed for SERIOUS athletes looking for precision.Identical to a baseplate compass, this type of compass has a sighting glass for reading the compass and viewing the target to be reached. This model has a protective casing to protect the compass for intensive activities.
    2. Make sure the compass is flat when using it.
Make sure the compass lays flat to be sure it indicates magnetic north correctly. Place your compass in the palm of your hand. When using a map, place the compass on the map on a flat surface.
    3. If your compass is not detecting the north
Use your compass at sufficient distance from any magnetic sources which will affect its capacity to detect the north: high-voltage power lines, mobile phones, keys, metal objects, and even another compass can affect the direction.

well after buying a second one of these compasses after thinking about the replacement is better the needle is more stable ok its still in 5 degree graduations but as the mils are in 64.000 you can use the each mil line as a degree (17.77)mils to a degree and on a compass the mils have been rounded up 20mil increments I think .anyway I'm really pleased

Solid framework, easy to navigate, pretty accurate. If you want to have compass and not to fear caring it everywhere, it is a compass to have. I like the locking device, it doesn't get loose. The dial not too loose, and not too stiff. Just right to rotate and find angles and azimuths.

The first thing I did after getting lost for two hours on top of a rock (Skandagiri, aka Kalavara Durga) was to get myself a compass.

Modern compasses are usually of three types Lensatic, mirror and orienteering. The Quechua C 400 Compass is a good solid lensatic' typical military field compass. Also known as a marching compass, as its name suggests, it is used to get from point A to B. This is a rugged workhorse of a compass that will hold up under the most demanding conditions. It comes with a detailed instruction manual (with easy to understand illustrations); I suggest you go through this a couple of times before using the compass. It's a great compass, takes some basic training to use it fully.

This model is a scale of 1: 25,000 which means one unit of length on the map is equal to 25,000 units on the ground, e.g.: 1 meter on the map is 25,000 meters on the ground. The compass is equipped with a small yet powerful magnifying lens which lets you see the degrees in the compass in great detail.

For those who like to actually be involved in hiking and where they are going, this is a must. If you wish to rely on some electronic gadget to tell you where you need to go, just wait until your batteries fails. The compass folds into a compact form which fits into your pocket, the only downside I see is that this model doesn't come with a carry pouch, which would have been really handy. It's tough as nails and easy to maintain.

Important: To ensure that the compass gives an accurate reading, keep it flat and away from magnetic interference such as cell phones or radio speakers.

Bottom line: Overall it's a good solid military compass to get the job done! Great price!
